Are You Comparing Apples to Apples?
One of the most common questions families ask when touring child care programs is:
“Why is there such a big difference in tuition from one center to another?”
It’s a fair question. In some communities, the difference can be hundreds of dollars per month for children of the same age.
The answer is that not all child care programs are built the same way.
And that’s okay.
A smaller neighborhood program, a church-based preschool, an independently owned center, and a large accredited early learning center may all provide safe, nurturing care. But the experience, resources, and operational investments behind each program can look very different.
When comparing programs, it can be helpful to look beyond the weekly tuition and ask what is included.
Some centers invest heavily in curriculum development, teacher training, classroom resources, enrichment programs, technology, security systems, outdoor learning environments, and ongoing facility improvements. Others may include programs such as music, yoga, movement, or special events as part of tuition rather than offering them as optional add-ons.
Some programs pursue accreditation, a voluntary process that requires centers to meet standards that go beyond basic state licensing requirements. Accreditation often involves additional staff training, classroom assessments, family engagement initiatives, and a commitment to continuous quality improvement.
Many centers also make different choices when it comes to employee benefits, professional development, classroom materials, food programs, cleaning protocols, and facility upgrades. These decisions all contribute to the overall cost of operating a program.
We always encourage families to tour more than one program. Every center has its own personality, philosophy, strengths, and culture. What feels like the perfect fit for one family may not be the right fit for another.
Visiting multiple programs gives families the opportunity to compare environments, ask questions, and better understand what matters most to them. Often, it isn’t until you’ve toured several centers that you begin to notice the differences in classroom design, teacher engagement, communication styles, enrichment opportunities, and the overall family experience.
Newer facilities may offer advantages such as modern classroom layouts, updated security features, purpose-built learning environments, and spaces specifically designed to support today’s educational practices. At the same time, many established programs have built strong reputations, experienced teams, and deep roots within their communities. Neither is automatically better. The goal is to understand what each program offers and determine which environment best aligns with your family’s priorities.
One of the biggest misconceptions in child care is that price alone determines quality. In reality, price often reflects the choices a program makes behind the scenes. Two centers may both provide loving care, but one may invest more heavily in teacher development, enrichment experiences, facility upgrades, sanitation practices, family events, technology, or classroom resources.
None of this means one center is right for every family.
In fact, one of the most important things we believe is that families should choose a program that aligns with both their values and their budget. The best child care decision is not always the most expensive one. It’s the one that provides the experience, environment, and support your family is looking for.
The best tours don’t focus on what a center says about itself. They focus on what you observe, what questions you ask, and how the program makes you feel.
